A species of flowering plant in the verbena or vervain family, Mexican Oregano, is native to the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central America as far south as Nicaragua. Despite sharing the name "oregano," it belongs to the verbena family (Verbenaceae), whereas traditional Mediterranean oregano belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae). It delivers a robust, earthy flavor with distinct citrus and licorice undertones, making it a staple in traditional Mexican, Tex-Mex, and Central American cuisines.
